An Optimum Linear-Matrix Stereo Imaging System

Document Thumbnail

A method of providing stereophonic imaging for a large listening area is presented. This method, in its basic form, utilizes three loudspeakers to present a 2-channel stereo program source. It overcomes some of the basic problems of two loudspeaker stereo imaging through the use of a linear matrix optimized for maximum electrical separation and optimum placement and acoustic interaction of the loudspeakers. A listening experiment is conduced to show how the optimum matrix system compares to conventional stereo imaging when using an amplitude pan control for sound source placement.
