An Objective Method for Sound-quality Estimation of Compression Systems

The feasibility of, and the necessity for, an objective estimate of the psychophysiological perception of sound after compression are discussed. Some possible methods are studied. The preferable method is the consonance method. The basic indication of sound-quality deterioration is the appearance of dissonance components. The measurement results of two mass-produced codecs are studied. The first operates according to the MPEG-2, Layer II Standard (manufactured by RE); and the second operates on the ADPCM principle (manufactured by APT). Measurements carried out by the consonance method show the MPEG system provides better results than the ADPCM system.
