The fusion of audio/video and data networking produces a number of benefits and the potential for novel applications. A network technology must meet some basic requirements if it is to carry real-time audio or video. Emerging technologies studiously meet these requirements. The most exciting network technologies are Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Ethernet, and IEEE-1394. Each of these networks has a different heritage and takes a different approach towards supporting real-time audio and video data streams.
