While gathering material for a review chapter on digital audio architecture, the author decided to pursue the patent literature for the past 25 years. Starting from the Acoustical Society patent reviews, the author has examined a number of patents on the design of synthesizers. These patents will be reviewed and placed in their historical context together with the 'conventional' open literature.
