Multimedia Radio

Document Thumbnail

In the future age of multimedia communications, radio will only survive as an attractive medium if it can support test, pictures and video accompanying the audio while maintaining its flexibility and portability. In this case, radio will offer significant advantages as compared to TV in many cases, especially in terms of cost and spectrum efficiency. Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) is capable to provide this kind of transmissions, if a suitable protocol is implemented. Based on the requirements of multimedia radio studied by a programme example, a proposal for such a protocol is developed which can handle the transmission, storage and display of different types of data in a multimedia broadcast. A receiver concept for such services is discussed. Many of the future multimedia elements like surround sound, text and picture transmission have already been specified and demonstrated in DAB.
