Fiber-Optic Connector Considerations for Professional Audio

Document Thumbnail

The use of fiber-optic technology is emerging rapidly in professional audio. Since this technology is relatively new to audio, we must consider which fiber-optic connectors (FOCs) are likely to succeed in professional audio. We must first examine the 20-year-long track record of usage in the telephone industry and then make some decisions on selecting the proper FOCs for professional audio standardization. There are many types of FOCs being used today, but seven are dominant in the field of communications. These seven FOC types are examined, and those that are most likely to succeed in professional audio are indicated. A glossary of relevant terms is included.
