A novel technique for the removal of additive noise from audio signals is proposed. The estimates of noise are obtained from short silence intervals. Then, in the frequency domain, from consecutive frames of the audio waveform, the estimated subjective noise masking threshold is modified according to the estimate of subjective noise distortion and the signal is resynthesized.
