This paper discusses a method for determining the characteristics of a variable microphone array that separately generates interaural time and intensity differences to satisfy the duplex theory of stereophonic sound perception. The microphone system permits the use of different directivity patterns and maintains the facility of variable stereophonic recording angles. The matching of angular distortion of the reproduced sound field for specific microphone pairs in a given array is discussed, together with the variation of the overall value of angular distortion for different arrays.
