Conventional audio instruments can be used in unorthodox ways to measure the behavior of high-frequency oscillators in the presence of transient mechanical vibrations. The need to measure the transient frequency deviations of oscillators is common to many fields. Narrow-band communications systems and the study of the noise level due to microphonics in FM systems are two instances where this technique has been useful.
