Unequal Error Protection for Digital Sound Broadcasting-Principle and Performance

Document Thumbnail

The transmission of digital audio data via broadcast channels with mobile reception can never be absolutely free of errors because of large variations of the reception condition. Even with the best error protection scheme, bit errors cannot be avoided, and there will always exist an edge of the coverage area of a broadcast service. This contribution deals with different error protection schemes for the audio coding standard ISO 11172-3 and the corresponding error behavior in hostile reception situations. Subjective degradation characteristics of the audio signal due to different bit-error distributions are investigated, and possibilities of optimizing channel coding are discussed.
