File-Format Compatibility in Mass-Storage Archives and Digital Audio Networks

Document Thumbnail

Digital recording and digital processing opens computerized data file handling for use with sound and picture information. The most challenging problems for the introduction of local and wide-area data networks are related to reliable archive systems offering sufficient storage capacity and the compatibility of file formats used for data transfer and information exchange. Network and automation systems for broadcast and studio use, based on standard computer networks and satellite links, are discussed, as well as an approach to mass storage archives following the IEC ID1 data format, offering up to 30 tetrabytes of storage capacity. The internal handling of file exchange and their consequences for standardized data formats will be investigated in relation to data reduction, data management, and their practical applications in production, broadcasting, and television.
