Television Talkback Within the VBI
A television talkback system is described which enables speech communication between studio centers, outside broadcast and news gathering sites. The speech signals are digitally encoded using low-bit rate CELP encoders and the data carried in teletext format during the television vertical blanking interval (VBI). Two channels can be conveyed within a single teletext line per field at a data rate of 7.6kb/s per channel. The system simplifies the provision of talkback circuits and can be used throughout the broadcast chain including the output from broadcast transmitters.
