Studios do not always fulfill the acoustic requirements of users. It may be that noise from outside intrudes, air conditioning is too noisy, or strong sound reflections produce coloration which affect the recordings. In the control room reproduction may be impaired even though the highest quality monitor loudspeakers are employed. The identification of these faults is difficult and their correction is not always possible. Special techniques may have to be employed in recording and monitoring in order to accommodate these characteristics. This might involve the careful selection and placement of special microphones and studio screens; air conditioning may have to be turned off. In the control room, monitor loudspeakers may be placed closer to the listening point, reflectors may be introduced to improve the modal distribution. These defects are a result of deficiencies in the process of design and construction. The defects may be so serious that the studios cannot be used. The consequences may be serious, leading to legal action being taken for financial loss. This paper describes some defects of studio construction and some of the consequences for recording and monitoring.
