The AES-EBU digital audio interface has been slow to gain market acceptance, partly due to interface complexity, specification ambiguities, lack of commercial IC's, and the effort required for discrete implementations. This has prompted implementation short-cuts, including using consumer style interface IC's, frequently resulting in product incompatibilities. Fundamental interface parameters and their problems will be described. Methods of testing interface integrity and simple checks of implementation completeness will be discussed.
