Research into magnetic recording history can trace the invention of this technique back to 1878 (cf. -A Hundred Years of Magnetic Sound Recording-, JAES Vol.36 No.3, 1988). The American Oberlin Smith's disappointment at the unsatisfying results of the first Edison Phonograph encouraged him to his own developments in the field of sound recording. Original documents, found only a few months ago, give opportunity for a new evaluation of Smith's work.
