Current Compact Disc premastering involves editing digital audio onto the video track of a 3/4 inch U-Matic Tape with SMPTE and PQ subcode information encoded on the audio tracks. The Sonic System trademark hard-disk editing system combined with the CD Maker trademark Compact Disk Recording System - together called the CD Workstation - has many advantages over this method including: the immediate gratification of CD reference copies without pressing plant turn-around, small low-cost archival quality copies that don`t degrade after multiple auditions, and PQ information entered on the fly during audition or transferred from edit decision lists with standard offsets automatically applied. This paper will highlight these advantages and the implications for the future of CD premastering.
