Another Look at the Importance of Transducer Polarity in the Recording Studio

Document Thumbnail

Assuming identical polarity of the left and right loudspeakers in a reproducing system, earlier studies have investigated the audibility of absolute versus reversed polarity. Little is known about the importance of absolute polarity in headphones. This paper presents experiments which reveal the need to determine and maintain absolute acoustical polarity whenever headphone foldbackis utilized in the studio. Simple tests and practical solutions are described.
