Digital Audio in TV Broadcasting

This paper will review from the UK viewpoint, the operational impact of digital audio technologies within a large broadcasting organization. Consideration is given to the gradual evolution of digital audio and what it has provided so far for the audio people who endeavor to meet the program makers` demands. Topics discussed include the application of digital audio to live and recorded sound acquisition, post-production including the use of hard-disk systems, together with a review of digital distribution and transmission systems such as NICAM. Questions are posed as to whether early expectations have been fulfilled, have the right tools been provided? What of the future, what are the needs of today`s TV audio practitioners, is manufacturing industry rising to the challenge? What does the viewer at home expect?
