The transmission of dual channel, high quality audio for television broadcasting has arrived. Thames Television began test transmissions as of March 1989. LWT are also involved in the London area and YTV in Yorkshire. The IBA are aiming for 75% coverage of the UK by 1990. As has already been presented in previous papers, the method used by Thames TV for the distribution of digital audio signals in the studio environment is via the AES/EBU interface. The method for the transmission of digital audio signals is via Nicam 728, a system which employs a sample rate of 32kHz, 10 bits of audio data, plus frame alignment, control and additional data bits. The Nicam digital audio signal is inserted in the vision sync pulses for relaying to the transmitter where it is removed to be decoded for the analogue FM mono carrier and the digits modulated in a DPSK form to provide the digital stereo audio carrier. In the studio therefore there is an exciting opportunity, the conversion from AES/EBU to Nicam in the digital domain. It there were achieved, a totally digital audio link would be provided from VTRs to the viewer`s home.
