A lumped-parameter mathematical model is used to investigate the effect that some of the design factors of a phonograph stylus, such as cantilever length, material, and elastomer damping, have on its group delay and phase characteristics. The model itself is described in detail, to the extent that its parameter values, as they would apply to a generalized stylus design having a particular set of dimensions, materials, and so on, can be calculated.
