Mathematical Noise Modeling and Analysis of Some Popular Preamplifier Circuit Topologies

Document Thumbnail

A practical method of analyzing the theoretical noise performance of cascaded amplifier stages is developed. As an illustration of the model, popular preamplifier topologies are examined in detail, and from these results a parallel-connected cascode is proposed as a high-performance gain cell for a moving-coil cartridge. The theoretical and measured noise of the cell deviate by approximately 1 dB, therefore validating the mathematical model as a powerful method of ascertaining the noise performance of multistage amplifier circuits.
