On the Design of a Microprocessor Driven Ambient-Sensing Automatic Level Controller

The design of a new type of automatic level controller for paging, public address and background music systems is described. A hybrid design places analogue circuitry under microprocessor control. The fast semi-automated calibration procedure places two snap shots of the environment`s acoustical performance into non-volatile memory, to become the basis for all gain change decisions. Error-free performance is made possible through the use of simple artificial intelligence techniques that give the unit the ability to discriminate between ambient noise from the environment, and signals from the system itself.
