Gaining Time for Intelligent Signal Processing by Delay Systems

Document Thumbnail

Although 16-bit digital audio systems theoretically produce a 98dB signal-to-noise ratio, this dynamic range is not realized, due to safety considerations concerning overloading and properties of auditory perception. By -intelligent- processing of the audio signals it seems feasible to enhance the perceived dynamic range of speech and music. Some proposals using delay systems for on-line applications are made e.g. dynamic compression with conservation of short time dynamics, suppression of short time overloading, and reduction of crest factors of signals by short time phase shifting.
