The dynamic characteristics of signal processing devices such as compressors and expanders are normally made with a tone burst generator and an oscilloscope. This is expensive to automate for production testing of such units. A technique is described for characterizing signal processing devices by measuring the RMS signal amplitude as a function of the applied signal duration and repetition rate. This can be performed using conventional computer controlled instrumentation. Examples of measurements on commercial processing equipment are presented.
