A Digital Signal Processing Algorithm for Digital Audio Disk Recording

A digital signal processing algorithm is discussed which reduces the digital audio data rate required for disk recording and editing applications. A programmable microprocessor processes the audio samples subject to data rate, quality, and disk performance constraints. One mode of operation preserves full 16-bit data integrity while reducing storage requirements by a factor of two or more. Another mode provides a selection of lower data rates while optimizing subjective quality. Audio measurements and field use reports are presented.
