Predicting the Acoustical Performance of a Sound System by Computer

The EPIDAURE computer program which calculates room impulse responses using the cones method developed by the CSTS has been adapted to predict the acoustical performances of any sound system. The transfer function from the input signal to the listener is calculated from the entire real sound field without the approximations which can be found in other programs. Input data are the 3D geometry from architect's drawings and the surface absorption coefficients, the position and shifting in site and azimuth of the speakers, their directivities, their sound pressure levels at 1m, and their time delays. Echgograms at points located on a grid over audience surfaces are calculated. Output data are displayed in color maps of sound pressure level and speech intelligibility on the audience surfaces.
