Another Approach to the Ideal Crossover: The Energy Filler

Document Thumbnail

It is well known that an ideal crossover filter should offer a set of characteristics which are theoretically unrealizable. As a consequence, several ways of approximating this ideal have been proposed in the recent literature. This work reports on an approach which (to the author's knowledge) has not yet been pursued: trying to compensate the energy losses in the crossover region typical of a Linkwitz filter with an additional driver (the "energy filler"). The corresponding crossover theory is presented together with several observations relevant to the implementation of the device. A loudspeaker system has been developed and tested with good subjective as well as measuring results.
