An 8th-Order State-Variable Filter for Linkwitz-Riley Active Crossover Designs

Presented is a new 8th-order (48 dB/octave) state-variable filter topology with complete design equations for the general solution, as well as a specific solution yielding an 8th-order Linkwitz-Riley alignment (LR-8). Worst case analysis outlines component tolerances required for manufacturing repeatability. Performance comparison with 4th-order Linkwitz-Riley (LR-4) designs show the many advantages of narrowing the crossover region and steepening the crossover slopes. Included are transient analysis results for LR-4 and LR-8 designs. Phase response analysis demonstrates that LR-4 designs eliminate the 180-degree phase shift exhibited by LR-4 designs at the crossover frequency.
