I will review in-plant and network television stereo transmission systems, both discrete and matrixed, examining the effect of interchannel amplitude and phase variations on the stereo and the mono sum signals for each system and the cumulative effects of a long chain of equipment and transmission links. I will also explain why NBC decided to distribute stereo in the discrete left and right channel format, discuss ways of monitoring the stereo signal, and speak briefly about surround-sound transmission on television.:
