The application of general communication theory to acoustics leads to the separation of the sound carrier and its modulations. The way in which our sense of hearing performs this separation is illustrated, and its importance for the understanding of some acoustic phenomena is pointed out. Conditions for satisfactory sound reproduction are formulated and mathematically analyzed.
