Active equalization to modify the transient response of sealed-box loudspeakers is examined in conjunction with frequency-response equalization. The form of the active equalizer`s transfer function for optimum transient response is derived, and the advantages and disadvantages of equalization are discussed. An argument is made for minimizing the order of the transfer function of the combined loudspeaker and equalizer, and for choosing non-Butterworth alignments. A circuit is given for modifying the response of the KLH-6 loudspeaker as a practical example.
