Standard spectral measurements do not reliably predict perceived loudspeaker differences. We believe that this is because such measurements are 1) too simple, omitting critical information related to actual listening conditions, or 2) include much irrelevant data, ignoring perceptual limits imposed by psychophysical processes. A new system of measurement is described which is based on digital signal processing and biophysical modeling, and which provides perceptually important information lost by conventional measurement. Various loudspeakers are compared using the system.
