The sound pickup means during the first half-century of the record industry employed an acoustomechanical system. The microphone, vacuum tube amplifier, and disc cutter initiated electrical recording at the beginning of the second half-century. The historical development, the present status, and the possible future course of the sound pickup means, and in particular the microphone, as related to the record industry are presented.
