Instrumentation used underwater must be suspended from the surface, placed on the bottom or made neutrally buoyant to permit it to hover at a desired depth. Cable links which can be used for the surface suspended and bottomed instrumentation are discussed, and typical cables for underwater use are described. Results of an experiment to determine the effect of shock isolating the underwater instrumentation are shown. To emphasize the importance of a quiet suspension system, excerpts from a stereophonic tape of the sounds obtained from hydrophones solidly coupled to an armored cable will be played.
