Until recently the problems associated with composing computer generated music were so formidable that most composers working in electronic music preferred well-known analog synthesizers in spite of their serious limitations. With the development of special purpose digital systems, like the Norlin/Dartmouth system, many more composers can now take advantage of digital synthesis provided that languages exist which make instrument design and complex musical constructs accessible to those who have never studied acoustics or computer programming.
