Tangential tracking tone arms are recognized as ideal because they have no tracking distortion and provide good tracking ability. The motion of the stylus in tangential tracking tone arms during reproduction is identical to that of the stylus of a recording head during recording. The most important point in the design of a tangential tracking tone arm is the structure which creates the linear motion of the stylus. In the conventional tangential tracking tone arm, the linear motion is provided by a conventional motor through a rotary-to-linear conversion mechanism, typically a screw. Such a tone arm is not satisfactory for high fidelity reproduction because it is under the influence of noise and vibration produced by the motor. Since the linear motion of the newly developed tangential tracking tone arm is produced by a linear servo-motor, a very high signal-to-noise ratio of 78 dB (DIN 8) has been achieved.
