Playing time, disk diameter, bandwidth, dynamic range, and overload probabilities are conflicting parameters for disk recording. A theory has been developed to predict the tradeoffs that are available among these performance characteristics for Gaussian distributed program material. Practical implications of this theory are reviewed.
