The more recent approaches toward the implementation of voltage-controlled amplifiers have employed log-antilog conversion techniques. Presented in this paper is an electronic gain control circuit which uses such techniques and is well suited for monolithic integration into a low-cost integrated circuit. The various considerations affecting such parameters as control voltage feedthrough, distortion, noise, and bandwidth are discussed. Finally, a potential application in a voltage-controlled shelving equalizer is given.
