A measurement technique is presented which was used 25 years ago to assess the ability of an amplifier to handle high-frequency program and noise components. It was found that amplifiers operating with limited headroom should be preceded by a low-pass filter to prevent the generation of in-band intermodulation products. It is suggested that the method may have value in measuring transient intermodulation in solid-state amplifiers incorporating large values of negative feedback.
