The performance of current hearing aids is reviewed and the limitations of performance specifications as applied to fitted aids outlined. It is found, for example, that the amplification required is proportional to the 0.4th rather than the first power of the hearing loss. Requirements indicate that levels up to 140 dB are needed and the concomitant dangers and problems are discussed.
