A Novel Planiform Loudspeaker System

An analysis of the performance of conventional loudspeakers has shown that there are a number of areas where limitations exist: 1) The lack of a smooth frequency response, unless severe penalties are taken with overall efficiency; the problem is due to inadequate diaphragm technology and low inherent motor efficiency, 2) Nonlinearity due to diaphragm technology and motor performance, 3) Coloration due to resonance in supporting baffles and cabinets, and 4) The inability of those systems having smooth frequency response to produce high acoustic output levels without sustaining permanent damage due to thermal overload. In this paper, a mid-range to high-frequency transducer is described which is an attempt to overcome some of these limitations. Some indications on the incorporation of the unit into a full range loudspeaker are also described.
