For many reasons, the broadcasting of quadraphony is greatly simplified if the information can be compressed into less than four channels, and therefore much attention is being given to channel reduction work. Many ideas have been proposed for reducing the information into two channels for recording or transmission and splitting it on reception to feed four loudspeakers. The majority of these suggestions, some of which are already being promoted as systems for discs, involve the use of phase and amplitude matrices to encode and decode the signals. The two encoded signals therefore, can contain signals of equal, or nearly equal amplitude, and non-equal phase, and this poses questions of compatibility, since the two encoded signals have to provide both acceptable mono and stereo as well as being decodable to give quadraphony.
