A Digital Rhythm and Timing Generator for Electronic Music Applications

An inexpensive digital rhythm and timing generator is described that provides six layers of gate and trigger sequences. The device offers real-time programmability, flexibility, and precision control of timing both for integer divisions of a period and for cyclical permutation and polyrhythms. The design is intended as a musical/technical alternative for the electronic musician who does not have the financial or conceptual resources for microprocessor or computer equipment but who wishes to use advanced techniques of digital rhythm generation.
