Using enhanced audio to create an accessible mobile augmented reality app for visually impaired users

Enhanced audio techniques (Enhanced Audio Description and Narrative Importance) have proven successful in traditional linear media (i.e. television) for increasing the accessibility, enjoyment and narrative comprehension of content for Visually Impaired (VI) users. This project investigated whether such approaches can be applied to the non-linear, interactive and immersive medium of mobile Augmented Reality (AR). To do so, an experimental app with enhanced audio features was developed and updated iteratively based on VI user feedback. This paper presents the creative and technical processes used in this AR app.
