The genesis of the vibratory phenomena recorded on the thoracic surface in man is discussed in terms of basic principles of acoustic physics. Hardware systems for recording heart sounds and murmurs are described. Many typical onocardiographic patterns which have been developed for a variety of cardiovascular lesions are analyzed in terms of four independent acoustic parameters, intensity, frequency, complexity, and duration.
