The Finer Structure of Magnetic Tape: Features at High Magnification of Oxide Coatings and Bases

Document Thumbnail

Surface features of magnetic oxide coatings have been studied. However, high-power microscopy of tape has not been published. Utilizing microtome tissue techniques, sections in three planes of 1/4- magnetic tape were prepared at 2 to 4 micra (80 to 160 microinches). Kodachrome photomicrographs under polarized and other lighting, up to 1500 magnification, reveal the internal structure and defects in the oxide coating. Principal internal defects were pinholes, foreign bodies and oxide particle aggregates. The orientation of oxide particles along the tape axis was visualized at 1500 magnification. Section profiles of coatings confirm prior studies of surface smoothness. Homogeneity and smoothness of polyester and acetate bases are demonstrated. Kodachrome photomicrographs.
