The various types of tape noise that occur in audio recording systems are described and related, quantitatively where possible, to the physical properties of the oxide particles and the coating and to the relevant elements of the recording system design. Relevant aspects of printthrough are included. A discussion of the results is directed toward background noise in low-speed recording systems with particular reference to achieving high-fidelity performance from audio cassettes.
