Individual sound for the driver and passengers in a car could bring additional values like improved safety, higher comfort and improved in-car entertainment. One way to achieve sound zones, a system allowing for addressing different locations in a car with individual sound, is to use remotely located acoustic sources. The focus of this study is to evaluate the possibility for sound zones in vehicles. It is essential for the evaluation to understand and being able to simulate the acoustics in the car environment. Therefore, an interior acoustic simulation model with high correlation with measurements has been developed. Based on this model the concept of sound zones was shown to be promising with more than 20 dB separation between the sound zones. The source strength was chosen taking into account feasibility of the necessary transducers with state-of-the art flat speaker technology.
