A unique European collection of magnetic tapes, from the 1934 Fe-powder to the modern mylar based material was analyzed electro-acoustically. The tapes approach successfully the -ideal- structure in good agreement with the approximative simplified models derived from the Preisach diagrams of the particular tapes, indicating their basic structural ability as recording medium.
