The decreasing availability in the market-place of monaural recordings has raised the important question of the compatibility of the stereo recording when played back with the vast number of monaural pickup cartridges in current use. The results show a rather wide range of effects from minimal wear to very rapid deterioration when stereophonic recordings are reproduced with a low compliance cartridge requiring heavy tracking force.
